I Just got off a phone call with a client of mine. We’re setting up a new pay per click program for him. We’re also doing some content development. When he spoke, he got really excited and said, “I want to be able to rank for this keyword and that keyword.”
Understand, they’re all one word keywords in his marketplace thone-word never going to rank for in a million years because there’s been other companies in that space for 15 years now, who already have 500 inbound links. He’s never going to be able to compete on that level for that keyword.
So, I told him about long tail keywords. As a strategy, long-tail keywords get you much closer to a buyer than using one or two word keywords. Here’s my example:
If you’re a plumber in Philadelphia, trying to get ranked for ‘Philadelphia plumber’ or ‘plumber in Philadelphia’ is it’s going to take a very long time, if ever. In fact, you’re probably never going to get a sniff of page 5 of Google for that keyword in 2019.
But, let’s say you work in one of the suburbs of Philly like Abington and you tried to compete for keywords like ‘plumbing contractor in Abington,’ or ‘Abington drain cleaning companies’ or ‘plumber who does drain cleaning in Abington.’
First off, you’re much closer to a buyer with a long tail keyword of three, four, or five words. Secondl, it’s going to take you a lot less time to rank organically for that phrase.
It’s also going to cost you a lot less to buy that keyword in a pay per click campaign. So, while you can go out and let the other guys beat each other over the head for ‘Philadelphia plumber’ to get a hundred clicks for that keyword, you’re going to put together a solid list of 5, 10 or 15 long-tail keywords of between 3 to 5 words each.
If you create specific pages on your website and then develop content around those keywords and made sure that the content was good, over time, you’ll rank for those keywords.
You’ll also be a lot closer to a buyer, someone looking for a snake cleaning in Abington is ready to buy.
What to do next
Come up with a list of ten new keywords that are four or five words long. Sit down and write content for those keywords. Get them up on your website and I guarantee within three months, you’ll start getting found on the first page for those keywords and you’ll start to develop business from it.
By the way, that’s how those SEO companies get you on the first page. They get you found for three to five word keywords and they say to you, “Hey look, we’ve got you on the first page of Google.” You can do that yourself. It will take you an hour to two hours to write a page worth of content and get found on the first page of Google all by yourself.
